Grid-forming inverters paired with battery storage and solar are among the fastest and cheapest ways to more powerful and reliable electric grid. Why grid forming inverters? Unlike grid following, grid-forming inverters provide both the power to meet our growing needs, as well as the inertia needed to keep stability. Why energy storage? With the energy storage tax credit available until 2032, along with innovative states all over the country incentivizing storage development, these factors enable the financing of these assets at scale. The timeline for getting grid-forming inverter projects online compared to traditional solutions, such as synchronous condensers or transmission upgrades, strongly favors their deployment. A community-scale solar + storage project could be developed, financed and built within 2 years, but these legacy solutions could take 4 to 10. As demand continues to rise because of AI and electrification, the grid needs more power. Historically, distribution systems have allowed only grid-following inverters, but without that inertia from grid-forming inverters, power quality becomes less reliable.
