PFAS regulations and industry contamination are changing the face of water treatment chemicals and solutions. Municipal utilities, industrial companies, airports, and defense facilities are coming under increasing pressure to learn how PFAS gets into their water systems and which treatments can eliminate or control them.
The regulatory landscape is not fully formed yet. In June 2026, the EPA said it is advancing technology-based effluent limitations and pretreatment standards for key industrial categories that discharge PFAS, including chemical manufacturers and other sources. The agency said the proposed rule would be issued for public comment in the coming months.

For this reason, it is significant for those involved with the purification of water due to the fact that PFAS cannot be solved by means of dose alone. Standardized treatment chemistry may not be able to adequately deal with such resistant compounds.
In a scientific review carried out in 2026, it was identified that the discharge of industrial PFAS is one of the most persistent water treatment challenges. This was due to its chemical and thermal stability. The review also noted that the process of adsorption, ion exchange, or membrane filtration will not be able to ensure total destruction in industrial wastewater.
This creates a stronger role for integrated solution providers. Customers need sampling plans, source identification, pilot testing, media selection and residuals management. A treatment system that captures PFAS still leaves questions about spent media, concentrate disposal or long-term liability.
Industries have unique exposures to PFASs. As stated in compliance predictions regarding PFAS, industries can be exposed to PFAS contamination via historical materials, process waters, wastewater disposal, and on-site waste management. Airports and military installations also have existing PFAS contamination from aqueous film-forming foam.
Controversy still exists regarding the regulatory environment. Recent reporting by AP has indicated that the EPA was intending to keep stringent regulations for the drinking water for PFOA and PFOS at 4 parts per trillion, but make amendments for other PFAS.
Solutions vendors thus need to assist their customers in preparing without making unrealistic promises. For one customer, the solution could be a modular system that allows for upgrading in the event of a shift in regulations. The other customer may need an interim solution as the source control work is ongoing.
However, the treatment of PFAS poses issues in terms of communication. In this regard, clients need to justify their treatment options to regulators, boards, communities, and even shareholders. Service providers who can communicate their treatment options effectively stand out from the rest.
The next phase of PFAS-related water treatment will likely reward firms that combine chemistry, media systems, membrane design and compliance planning. Fragmented approaches may leave gaps.
Water treatment chemicals and solutions are moving into a more complex contaminant-control era. Their strongest value will come from helping customers manage PFAS with tested methods, transparent limits and practical long-term plans.
