As per US EPA, AMI comprises four major components: meters, meter interface units (MIUs), other sensors, and remotely managed variables. Meters measure the flow to a consumer relationship, after which the MIU accepts a hardwired gesture from the meter, transforms this signal to a flow value, saves the flow value, and wirelessly uploads the data to the information management system.
Other sensors, such as pressure, temperature, sound, and water quality monitors, are generally used in concurrence with these meters. The information management system accepts the data, sometimes incorporated into the utility's SCADA system.
The information management system may switch off or on water service through the remotely handled valves at a customer association.

Smart Meters
Smart meters present readings to utilities, which process, examine, and share the outcomes with customers for invoicing energy feedback and time-related prices.
Smart meters are characteristic of remote connect/disconnect, error identification, outage trailing, voltage monitoring, and bidirectional electricity metering.
Ultrasonic Meter
Ultrasonic flow meters utilize ultrasonic technology to determine fluid flow velocity through a pipe. The transmitter assesses signals from transmitted sound wave frequencies reflected off of gas bubbles or particles to estimate the flow rate. The time gap between upstream and downstream signals is calculated through transit time technology.
