In recent years, the move toward renewable energy has been a dominant theme across the entire energy industry, including gas utilities. Renewable natural gas, derived from organic waste, is gaining traction as a key component of decarbonization strategies for gas utilities. RNG can be produced from various waste sources, including landfills, wastewater treatment plants, and agricultural waste, and it has the added advantage of being compatible with existing natural gas infrastructure. By capturing methane emissions from these sources and converting them into usable energy, gas utility suppliers can provide a low-carbon alternative to conventional natural gas. At the regulatory level, gas utility suppliers are facing growing pressure to align with national and international climate goals. Governments across the globe are implementing stricter regulations aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions and transitioning to cleaner energy sources. In the European Union, the Green Deal is driving significant changes in the energy sector, with gas utilities expected to play a key role in achieving the region’s ambitious climate targets. Similarly, in the U.S., the Biden administration’s focus on clean energy and infrastructure development has prompted utilities to rethink their long- term strategies.
Regulatory frameworks are increasingly focusing on methane emissions, a potent greenhouse gas that is released during the extraction, transportation, and use of natural gas. Methane leaks from gas pipelines and storage facilities contribute significantly to the overall emissions footprint of the gas industry. As a result, regulators are pushing for stricter methane monitoring and reporting standards, as well as mandating the adoption of technologies that can detect and reduce methane emissions.
