Facilitates energy generation: Sludge is treated during wastewater treatment because it contains many biodegradable materials. It is treated with anaerobic microorganisms in heated and completely enclosed digesters, where bacteria flourish without oxygen. During anaerobic digestion, methane-rich gas is produced, extracted, and burned to generate electricity. Using this energy, wastewater treatment facilities can become self-sufficient. If extra power is generated, it can be fed into the national grid, decreasing reliance on non-renewable energy sources such as fossil fuels.
