Ryan Stubben, Chief Operations Officer, Andrew Wright, Director of Safety & Standards, Tim Van Barriger, President In a quiet suburban street, a crew lays the final stretch of fiber-optic cable beneath the pavement. In just a few weeks, homes once plagued by slow internet will have access to high-speed broadband, ready to step into a digital future. This seamless transformation is not the result of coincidence. It emerges from a deliberate blend of precision planning, cutting-edge technology, a qualified workforce, and an unrelenting commitment to quality.
We are young, tech-savvy, and committed to evolving the market, not just participating in it
Since its founding in 2017, Terrazon Group has pursued a mission far more ambitious than simply laying cable—one focused on reshaping the future of utility construction. This ambition is reflected in its comprehensive operating model, which encompasses everything from engineering, design and permitting, to directional boring, aerial construction, fiber placement, splicing and testing. By bringing these services under one roof, Terrazon Group streamlines execution, enhances accountability, and delivers measurable efficiencies for its clients.
“We are not just solving today’s problems. We are engineering our business to eliminate the challenges of five years from now,” says Tim Van Barriger, president. His words reflect a mindset that looks beyond the immediate task, viewing utility infrastructure as both a service and a strategic foundation for tomorrow’s connected communities.
Cutting-Edge Mentorship, Sustainable Pricing, and Uncompromising Standards
In addition to its end-to-end model, Terrazon Group is tackling one of the industry’s most pressing challenges: an aging workforce and increasingly complex easements. As AI data centers expand and federal broadband initiatives accelerate, the company is focused on recruiting entry-level talent with high potential to meet the demand wave and counter the growing retirement curve across the sector.
Besides, structured succession planning remains a blind spot across much of the industry. Critical questions like who will take over retiring leaders, how institutional knowledge will be transferred or how responsibilities will be delegated are often treated as afterthoughts.
Terrazon Group flips this norm, cultivating the next generation by systematically mentoring recruits in technical skills, strategic thinking, and leadership development. This forward-looking strategy reduces operational uncertainty and fosters long-term resilience in the face of generational turnover and technological disruption.
“We look at young professionals not just as hires, but as long-term investments. We are farming our future leaders,” says Van Barriger.
Inflation is another industry-wide threat, with material and labor costs climbing faster than project budgets. Many contractors respond by underbidding, which often leads to compromised quality and strained delivery.
In response, Terrazon Group takes a more strategic path. It addresses inflation through disciplined pricing and selective execution. Instead of chasing volume, it prioritizes operational efficiency and long-term value, delivering high-performing, profitable projects that meet client expectations and withstand the volatility of economic cycles.
Turnkey Thinking over Decentralized Patchwork
Just as it takes a long-term view on pricing, Terrazon Group applies the same discipline across its operations. While many contractors rely on fragmented, ad hoc processes, it embeds structure and accountability into every layer of execution. Weekly cross-functional check-ins cover financial performance, staffing, project milestones, and bottlenecks, creating an operational rhythm that drives agility.
Every process is documented, every meeting has a clear purpose, and every employee is empowered to proactively raise issues. The result is a learning organization that adapts in real-time, corrects course early, and prevents minor inefficiencies from becoming systemic failures.
This systematic thinking strengthens the company’s end-to-end project delivery model. Clients are spared the burden of coordinating multiple subcontractors and instead move seamlessly from permitting to trenching, splicing, and testing, with a single, accountable partner.
“Traditionally, a fiber project might require as many as five different contractors, each handling a separate piece. But we built the capability to do it all,” explains Van Barriger.
“Time and time again, working with Terrazon feels like working with an extension of our own team. We’re proud to be represented by them in the field, from fielding and design work, through construction and fiber delivery, Terrazon consistently goes above and beyond in quality and craftsmanship. Like any great partner, they don’t just communicate obstacles, they collaborate with us to find solutions, improve delivery timeframes, and lower costs,” states Carla Willits, director of operations at Vero Networks, reinforcing Van Barriger’s emphasis on full-spectrum partnership and problem-solving.
This turnkey model accelerates project delivery, improves cost accuracy, and reduces delays. Just as importantly, it results in richer data. Every splice, bore, and permit is captured, cataloged, and fed into a growing field-intelligence database, which is used to predict costs, identify recurring pain points, and expedite permitting in known geographies.
Tech-Forward in a Traditionally Stagnant Industry
One of Terrazon Group’s boldest bets is on technology. In an industry that still relies on legacy processes, it actively embraces digital tools to increase precision and mitigate risk. ArcGIS, a geographic information system, helps crews visualize dig paths, identify utility congestion, and detect conflicts before work begins. Tools like the G3 Verifier improve installation accuracy and reduce rework.
“We are young, tech-savvy, and committed to evolving the market, not just participating in it,” says Van Barriger.
This mindset is critical. For decades, innovation in utility contracting has been largely reactive, driven by client mandates or regulatory changes. Terrazon Group flips the script, using innovation as a proactive tool—integrating the latest technologies into its operations, decision-making, and service delivery.
With this future-forward posture, Terrazon Group doesn’t just manage risk—it helps redefine how the industry builds, measures, and evolves.
Planning for Scale without Losing Discipline
Terrazon Group’s ambitions extend beyond operational excellence. With plans to enter two new markets in the coming year and long-term aspirations to become a national provider, it’s preparing for transformational growth.
“We are working very hard behind the scenes to ensure we’re ready for the coming growth. When those big projects land, we do not want to be playing catch-up. We want to be fully prepared to execute,” Van Barriger says.
This “plan now, scale later” mindset has guided the company since day one. When Van Barriger launched Terrazon Group, he had deep domain expertise in utilities but limited experience in business operations. He sought guidance first by enrolling in the Small Business Development Center at Waubonsee Valley Community College and later by joining the Fox Valley Entrepreneurship Center (FVEC) accelerator program.
With the support of a business consultant, he developed a five-year plan based on scalable systems and disciplined growth. Today, Van Barriger sits on the FVEC board, drawing insights from industries such as retail, manufacturing, and logistics to continually evolve Terrazon Group’s strategy.
Utility construction often occurs out of sight, beneath pavement, behind fences, and inside utility vaults. But for Terrazon Group, what happens underground is the foundation of a bigger mission: building trust. Every trench laid, every conduit spliced, and every test logged reinforces a broader promise to clients, to communities, and the future.
“Everyone is good at something. The key is knowing what you don’t know and building the team that fills that in,” says Van Barriger.
This combination of humility, foresight, and operational rigor gives Terrazon Group its edge. As broadband access, climate resilience, and digital equity increasingly rely on dependable infrastructure, contractors like Terrazon Group serve more than just builders; they are architects of the future.
And in that future, the contractors who dig the deepest into process, into people, and possibility, will be the ones who rise the highest.
